untitled

I'm not just what you think of me.
I'm not just full of struts and steps, but what I am full of is hands that help.
So my palms push pyramids, yes my palms push pyramids,
By building upon the foundation that my founders laid.

I build homes, I build ways, I build dreams.
I come equipped with the tools to help build you up.
When I throw up the pyramid, I give you 3 sides of me.
Mind, Body,Soul, and I never give it scarcely.

I have nothing against this woman, she just made her own choice.
She choice her way, I chose mine,
Delta was my voice.

She when I look at you, I see myself,
And if I can not see you as my sister, then blurred is my vision,
Because we both have the same mission,
Just different vehicles driven.

Jasmine Mans "The Miseducation of Nikki Minaj

I'll admit. I started off liking Nikki Minaj, until i became over saturated with her. I admired the marketing ploy for her image, the outrageous outfits, colored hair, etc. to become a starlet all reminded me of Lady Gaga.

But that really changed this summer when i worked at Girls, Inc. A summer camp targeted for girls ages 6-18 to teach them to be: STRONG, SMART, BOLD. I was shocked, saddened, and disheartened when at least 3 girls in that age range knew full lyrics to Nikki Minaj's raps, yet couldn't tell me who Mae Jeminson was, shit some couldn't even tell me their teachers' names. I feel as if I'm a pretty good role model. College educated, driven, pretty, but these girls looked up to Nikki instead of me. How was I going to teach them to be:STRONG, SMART, and BOLD, when Nikki was telling them to be hyper sexual, do drugs and alcohol, and bisexuality is cool.

So I came across this piece "The Miseducation of Nikki Minaj" by Jasmine Mans. It explores what the media is doing to this sister, and challenges Nikki to go against that. What can we do to change this? I know I influenced at least one girl, but is one enough?

Tell me what you think.

First Order of Business

If I were an artist I would paint my life as a boardroom meeting with God at the head of the table, me, wanting to sit at the right hand of God, but often sitting elsewhere (my choice of course) and the devil somewhere in the room. My heart and brain are there too and my daily living depends on what is said and goes on in this meeting. Hence the name of the blog. But i like to know what goes on in other people's meetings and sometimes i don't mind people sitting in on mines.

So that's what THIS blog is about. I'm not deep, I'm fashionable, but not what you would call a trendsetter, I'm not all about who's doing who in the celebrity world....this ain't that type of meeting.

THIS meeting is to ENGAGE, EDUCATE, ENLIGHTEN. So with that being said...Let's begin.
